About this banknote
The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 5000 karbovantsiv banknote in 1993 as part of its coupon currency series, introduced to address hyperinflation following Ukraine's independence in 1991. This series served as a transitional currency until the introduction of the hryvnia in 1996.
The front of the banknote features the founding Viking brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv with their sister Lybid in the bow of a boat, symbolizing the legendary origins of Kyiv. The reverse depicts the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv. Printed by Thomas De La Rue without an imprint, the note measures 105 x 53 mm and lacks a security thread.
