The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 1000 karbovantsiv banknote in 1992, following Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991. This banknote was part of the karbovanets currency series introduced to replace the Soviet ruble, with the 1000 karbovantsiv note entering circulation on June 22, 1992.
The obverse features the 1982 monument commemorating Kyiv's 1,500th anniversary, depicting the legendary founders Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and their sister Lybid. The reverse displays the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv, an 11th-century architectural landmark. Printed by Thomas De La Rue without imprint, the note measures 105 × 53 mm and was demonetized on September 17, 1996.
