About this banknote
The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 5 karbovantsiv banknote in 1991. This series was introduced into circulation on January 10, 1992, as a transitional currency following Ukraine's declaration of independence on August 24, 1991. The banknotes were printed in France by the company "Imprimerie Spéciale de Fiduciaire."
The obverse features an image of Lybid, the sister of Kyiv's legendary founders, within an ornamental rosette on the left side. The reverse depicts Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv within an oval frame. The banknote measures 105 × 53 mm and has a "parquet" type watermark consisting of a geometric pattern of light diagonal lines across its entire surface.
