About this banknote

The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 25 karbovantsiv banknote in 1991 as part of the country's first series of banknotes following its declaration of independence. This series was introduced to establish a national currency distinct from the Soviet ruble.

The front of the note features a sculptural image of Lybid, the sister of Kyiv's legendary founders, from the Memorial in honor of the founding of Kyiv. The reverse depicts the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv, a historical monument from the first half of the 11th century. The note measures 105 x 53 mm and was printed by Imprimerie Spéciale de Banque (ISPB) in France. It was issued on January 10, 1992, and demonetized on October 1, 1994.
