About this banknote

The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 1,000,000 karbovantsiv banknote in 1995. This high-denomination note was introduced on May 12, 1995, during a period of hyperinflation, as a temporary currency measure before the introduction of the hryvnia in 1996.

The obverse features the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv, established in 1939 to commemorate the poet's 125th birthday. The reverse depicts the Red Building of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The banknote measures 126 x 57 mm and was demonetized on September 17, 1996.
