About this banknote
The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 50 karbovantsiv banknote in 1991 as part of the country's first series of banknotes following its declaration of independence on August 24, 1991. This series was introduced to establish a national currency during Ukraine's transition from the Soviet ruble.
The front of the banknote features an image of Lybid, the sister of Kyiv's legendary founders, from the monument honoring the city's establishment. The reverse depicts the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kyiv, a significant architectural monument from the 11th century. The note measures 105 × 53 mm and was printed by the French company ISPB. It was issued on January 10, 1992, and demonetized on October 1, 1994.
