The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 1 hryvnia banknote in 1995, with the series entering circulation on September 2, 1996. This release was part of Ukraine's transition from the karbovanets to the hryvnia, as decreed by President Leonid Kuchma on August 26, 1996.
