Banknotes of Sri Lanka

The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, established in 1950. Paper money was first introduced in Sri Lanka in 1885, with the issuance of banknotes by the British colonial government. A notable reform occurred in 1985 when the government redenominated the rupee, effectively slashing two zeros from the currency's value. Collectors are drawn to Sri Lankan banknotes for their vibrant colors and intricate designs that often feature local wildlife and flora. The 1941 series is particularly sought after due to its ornate designs and the unique depiction of the country's first official coins on the reverse side.
