Banknotes of Romania

The official currency of Romania is the leu, issued by the National Bank of Romania since 1880. Paper money was first introduced in the country in the 1860s, with the first series featuring prominent Romanian historical figures. A significant reform occurred in 2005, when Romania redenominated its currency, resulting in a new leu (RON) equal to 10,000 old lei.
Collectors are particularly drawn to Romania's banknotes for their intricate designs and vivid colors. The 100 leu note from the 2005 series prominently showcases the image of Mihai Eminescu, a revered Romanian poet, alongside a depiction of the famous "Timpul" newspaper. This design reflects Romania's literary heritage and the importance of literature in its national identity.
