About this banknote

The Romanian Ministry of Finance issued the 5 lei banknote on June 12, 1877, under the "Bilet Hypothecar" series. This issuance was authorized by the Law for the Issuance of Mortgage Notes, which permitted the Ministry to release bearer notes accepted for payments at all public offices.

A watermark of Emperor Trajan's laureate effigy is present. This note, measuring 152 x 86 mm, was printed in Paris at the Bank of France's workshops and is considered one of Romania's first banknotes.
