About this banknote

The Romanian State Treasury issued the 10 lei "Bilet Hypothecar" banknote on June 12, 1877, under the authority of Minister of Finance Ion Câmpineanu. This issuance was authorized by the Law for the Issuance of Hypothecary Notes, which permitted the Ministry of Finance to release bearer notes accepted for payment at all public offices.

The front of the banknote features two allegorical women at the lower center, children at the left and right, and an eagle with outstretched wings at the top center. The back displays the Romanian coat of arms at the lower center. The watermark is a laureate head of Emperor Trajan. This note was printed by the Banque de France in Paris, with a total of 614,350 copies produced.
