About this banknote
The National Bank of Ukraine issued the 500 karbovantsiv banknote on June 22, 1992. This note was part of the first series of Ukrainian currency introduced following the country's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991. The karbovanets served as Ukraine's temporary currency until the introduction of the hryvnia in 1996.
The obverse of the banknote features the Memorial to the Founders of Kyiv, depicting the legendary siblings Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and Lybid in a boat. The reverse showcases an engraving of the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. Printed by Thomas De La Rue without an imprint, the note measures 105 x 53 mm and was demonetized on September 1, 1995.
