About this banknote

The Tesouro Nacional (National Treasury) of Brazil issued the 1,000 cruzeiros banknote in 1943, as part of the country's monetary reform that introduced the cruzeiro to replace the mil-réis. This series was produced by the American Bank Note Company, New York, and featured handwritten signatures.

The obverse of the banknote displays a central portrait of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator credited with discovering Brazil. The reverse features an orange depiction of the "First Mass in Brazil," a painting by Victor Meirelles. This note was demonetized on February 12, 1967.
