About this banknote
The National Treasury of Brazil issued the 5 Cruzeiros banknote in 1942 as part of the Casa da Moeda Provisional Issue. This series was introduced to facilitate the transition from the mil réis system to the cruzeiro currency, which became the official currency on November 1, 1942.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, known as the Barão do Rio Branco, in an oval medallion at the center. The original 5 Mil Réis denomination is overprinted with "CASA DA MOEDA" and "5 CRUZEIROS" in blue rosettes. The back displays an allegorical scene with a child between two seated women representing Industry and Commerce. Printed by the American Bank Note Company, this note measures 162 x 74 mm and was demonetized on February 12, 1967.
