About this banknote
The Tesouro Nacional (National Treasury) of Brazil issued the 5 cruzeiros banknote in 1943, as part of the country's transition from the real to the cruzeiro currency, which began on November 1, 1942. This series was printed by the American Bank Note Company and featured hand-signed autographs, a practice that continued until the early 1950s.
The obverse of the banknote displays a blue portrait of José Maria da Silva Paranhos, known as Barão do Rio Branco, at the center, flanked by the numeral '5' on both sides. The reverse features a brown depiction of the painting "Conquista do Amazonas" by Antônio Parreiras. This note measures 157 x 67 mm and was demonetized on February 12, 1967.
