About this banknote
The National Treasury of Brazil issued the 20 Cruzeiros banknote in 1942 as part of the transition from the mil réis to the cruzeiro currency. This provisional issue involved overprinting existing 20 mil réis notes (Pick 48) with the new denomination to expedite the currency changeover.
The obverse features a portrait of Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca, Brazil's first president (1889–1891), centered and flanked by the numeral "20." A diagonal autograph of the responsible official crosses the note. In the upper left and lower right corners, blue rosettes contain the inscription "CASA DA MOEDA / 20 / CRUZEIROS." The reverse displays an image of the mythological goddess Minerva seated, with the denomination "20" on either side.
