About this banknote
The Estonian Provisional Government issued the 5000 Mark banknote in 1918 as part of the 5% Short-Term Obligations series. This series was introduced on November 30, 1918, to establish a national currency following Estonia's declaration of independence. The Estonian mark was initially equivalent to the German ostmark, reflecting the financial influences of the time.
This uniface banknote, printed on one side only, features a design that includes stylized trees with an owl in the center. The note is inscribed with "EESTI VABARIIGI KASSATÄHT" and "5 PENNI" on the obverse. The reverse contains additional inscriptions in multiple languages, including German, Swedish, and Russian. The 5000 Mark note was part of Estonia's early efforts to establish a stable monetary system during its initial period of independence.
