About this banknote
The Ukrainian People's Republic issued the 20 shahiv banknote in 1918 to address a shortage of metal for coinage. This emergency currency, known as "shahivky," was authorized on April 18, 1918, and included denominations of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 shahiv.
The front of the 20 shahiv note features a peasant holding a scythe, with the state name "УКРАЇНСЬКА НАРОДНЯ РЕСПУБЛІКА" above and the denomination "20 ШАГІВ 20" below. The reverse displays the national emblem, the trident (tryzub), at the top center, accompanied by the inscription "Ходить нарівні з дзвінкою монетою," meaning "Used along with the ringing coin."
