About this banknote
The Bulgarian National Bank issued the 20 leva banknote (Pick 118a) on July 5, 1999, as part of the fourth lev series introduced following the currency redenomination that took effect on the same date. This redenomination replaced 1,000 old leva with 1 new lev, aligning the new lev's value to 1 Deutsche Mark.
The obverse features a portrait of Stefan Stambolov (1854–1895) on the left, accompanied by a holographic strip along the left edge. The reverse displays the National Assembly building, along with motifs from Orlov Most (Eagle's Bridge) and Lavov Most (Lion's Bridge) in Sofia. The banknote measures 131 x 72 mm and includes security features such as a solid security thread with demetalized text "БНБ 20" and a watermark of Stambolov's portrait.
