About this banknote
The Central Bank of Ceylon issued the 2 rupees banknote (Pick 83a) on September 9, 1965. This series was introduced during the tenure of Minister of Finance U.B. Wanninayake and Governor W. Rajapatirana.
The obverse features the statue commonly referred to as King Parakramabahu I, though it is actually the statue of Sage Pulasthi in Polonnaruwa. The reverse depicts the Medirigiriya Vatadage, a circular Buddhist shrine in Polonnaruwa. The note measures 114 x 59 mm and was printed by Bradbury Wilkinson and Company, United Kingdom.
