About this banknote
The Bulgarian National Bank issued the 1000 leva banknote in 1997. This series was introduced as part of Bulgaria's efforts to stabilize its currency during a period of economic reform. The banknote was printed by Giesecke+Devrient in Leipzig, Germany, with a total production of 20,000,000 notes.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Vasil Levski (1837–1873) on the left side, accompanied by one of his notable quotes: "If I shall win, I shall win for the entire people. If I shall lose, I shall lose only myself." To the right, there is a lithograph titled "Liberated Bulgaria" by artist Georgi Danchov. The back side displays the monument of Vasil Levski in Sofia, along with his written oath from the general meeting in Bucharest on 16 June 1872. The banknote was demonetized on 31 December 1999.
