About this banknote
The Banco Central de Chile issued the 500 pesos banknote (Pick 153e) in 1997. This series, introduced in 1977, continued to be produced until 2000. The 1997 issue features the signatures of Carlos Massad Abud, who served as President of the Central Bank from 1996 to 2003, and Camilo Carrasco Alfonso, General Manager from 1994 to 2005.
The obverse of the banknote displays a portrait of Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish conquistador and the first royal governor of Chile. The reverse features "La fundación de Santiago por Pedro de Valdivia," a painting by Pedro Lira depicting the founding of Santiago.
