About this banknote

The Banco Central de Chile issued the 500 pesos banknote in 1993 as part of a series that began in 1977 and continued until 2000. This series featured various signature combinations over the years, with the 1993 issue bearing the signatures of Roberto Zahler Mayanz, President of the Central Bank (1991-1996), and Enrique Marshall Rivera, General Manager of the Central Bank (1991-1994).

The obverse of the banknote displays a portrait of Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish conquistador, on the right side. The reverse features "La fundación de Santiago por Pedro de Valdivia," an oil painting by Pedro Lira depicting the founding of Santiago, housed in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago. The watermark is Ignacio Carrera Pinto.
