About this banknote
The Central Bank of Armenia issued the 500 dram banknote in 1993 as part of the country's first series of national currency, following its independence in 1991. This series was introduced on November 22, 1993, to replace the Soviet ruble, with an exchange rate of 200 rubles to one dram.
The obverse of the banknote features a tetradrachm coin depicting King Tigran II the Great at the center right and Mount Ararat at the upper left. The reverse displays an open book and a quill pen at the upper center right. The banknote measures 135 x 65 mm and was printed by Giesecke+Devrient in Leipzig, Germany. It was signed by Governor Isahak Isahakyan and Finance Minister Levon Barkhudaryan. This note ceased to be legal tender on September 1, 2005.
