About this banknote
The Bank of Zambia issued the 50 ngwee banknote (Pick 14) in 1973. This series was introduced to distinguish the 50 ngwee note from the newly issued 5 kwacha note, as their previous designs were similar in color, leading to confusion. The updated 50 ngwee note featured a black and lilac color scheme on a multicolor underprint for easier recognition.
The obverse of the note displays a portrait of President Kenneth Kaunda in tribal attire on the right, with the Zambian coat of arms at the upper center and an African fish eagle flying in front of the sun on the left. The reverse depicts miners working in a copper mine. The note was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Limited and bore the signature of Governor Bitwell R. Kuwani. This was the final issue of the 50 ngwee banknote before it was replaced by a coin.
