About this banknote

The Central Bank of Brazil issued this 5 centavos banknote in 1966 as part of a provisional measure during the transition to the new currency, the cruzeiro novo. To facilitate this change, existing 50 cruzeiros notes were overprinted with a black circular stamp indicating the new denomination of 5 centavos.

The front of the note features a portrait of Princess Isabel, flanked by the numerals "50," with the overprint "BANCO CENTRAL - 5 CENTAVOS" prominently displayed. The back depicts an allegorical figure representing the "Lei Áurea," the law that abolished slavery in Brazil. This banknote, measuring 157 x 67 mm, was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited, London, and was demonetized on May 14, 1970.
