About this banknote
The Norges Bank issued the 5-krone banknote in 1948 as part of its post-World War II currency series. This series was developed to replace the previous banknotes that were withdrawn on 9 September 1945. The design work for this series began before the war, with an artistic competition held in 1930; however, the war delayed its realization. Architect Arnstein Arneberg was later engaged to collaborate on the artistic aspects of the series.
The obverse of the 5-krone note features a portrait of Fridtjof Nansen, a renowned Norwegian explorer and humanitarian. The reverse depicts a fishing station in Lofoten, based on a painting by Axel Revold. This banknote measures 125 x 70 mm and was issued between 1955 and 1963. It ceased to be legal tender on 13 July 1999, with a total of 110,770,000 notes issued.
