About this banknote
The Bank of Ghana issued the 5 cedis banknote (Pick 38a) on July 1, 2007, as part of the third cedi series introduced that year. This series was launched to redenominate the currency by removing four zeros from the previous cedi, aiming to simplify transactions and accounting.
The front of the note features portraits of the "Big Six" leaders of Ghana: Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta. The Independence Arch is centrally placed, with the national coat of arms below and a star to the left. The reverse depicts the University of Ghana building. This note measures 141 x 68 mm and was printed by De La Rue.
