About this banknote
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued the 2,000 Rupees banknote on November 2, 2005, as part of the 2001 series. This high-denomination note was introduced to facilitate large transactions and reduce the volume of currency in circulation. It was printed by Thomas De La Rue and Company Limited.
The front of the note features a wedding ceremony procession with a dressed elephant, the Sigiriya Lion's Rock and King Kashyapa I's castle ruins, and a traditional ceremonial sunshade and fan known as Sesath or Sesatha attached to Mura Audaya (spear). The reverse displays a 6th-century Sigiriya fresco depicting a topless female holding flowers. The watermark is a heraldic lion passant from the national flag, holding a highlighted sword in its forepaw.
