About this banknote
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued the 1,000 rupee banknote on January 1, 2010, as part of a new series introduced to commemorate the bank's 60th anniversary. This series was officially released on February 4, 2011, featuring designs that highlight the country's development projects and cultural heritage.
The front of the note displays an artist's impression of the newly constructed Ramboda Tunnel, accompanied by the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot (Loriculus beryllinus) and the White Four Ring butterfly (Ypthima ceylonica). The reverse features a Malpadaya dancer and a Dawul Bera drummer, along with a Naga Raja carved guard stone from the Abhayagiri Monastery in Anuradhapura. The note measures 149 x 66 mm and was printed by De La Rue.
