About this banknote
The Bulgarian National Bank issued the 10,000 leva banknote in 1997. This series was introduced during a period of economic reform, following the implementation of a currency board arrangement in July 1997, which pegged the lev to the Deutsche Mark at a rate of 1,000 leva to 1 DM.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Dr. Petar Beron (1799–1871), a prominent Bulgarian educator and scientist, along with two globes and illustrations of a rhinoceros and a whale from his "Fish Primer." The reverse side displays a telescope, a map, a ringed planet, phases of the moon, and other scientific equipment. The note measures 112 x 62 mm and was printed by Giesecke+Devrient in Leipzig, Germany. A total of 40,000,000 pieces were produced.
