About this banknote
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued the 1000 rupee banknote (Pick 107a) on January 1, 1991, as part of the Sri Lanka Heritage series. This series was introduced to showcase the country's rich cultural heritage and remained in circulation until 2006.
The obverse features the decorated Maligawa tusker Raja with his mahout on the right, a moonstone above a smaller caparisoned elephant with a casket on the left, and a carved panel with a standing Gaja Sinha at the bottom left. The reverse depicts the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy with two peacocks at the bottom. The note measures 157 x 78.5 mm and was printed by De La Rue.
