About this banknote
The Bank of Estonia issued the 1000 Marka banknote in 1922 as part of its efforts to stabilize the national currency following Estonia's declaration of independence in 1918. This issuance aimed to replace the various foreign currencies circulating in Estonia at the time, including the German ostmark and Russian ruble.
The front of the banknote features intricate guilloche patterns printed in black on a lilac and green underprint. The reverse side displays a detailed view of the port of Tallinn (Reval). The note measures 159 x 95 mm and lacks a security thread. It includes a watermark with a circle in a square pattern. The banknote was printed by Elsner, Germany, and bears the signatures of Eduard Aule, Johan Sihver, and Leo Sepp.
