About this banknote

The Banco Central do Brasil issued the 1 cruzeiro novo banknote in 1967 as part of a currency reform to address inflation. This reform, effective from 13 February 1967, replaced the old cruzeiro at a rate of 1 cruzeiro novo to 1,000 cruzeiros.

The front of the banknote features an oval medallion with a portrait of explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral. The reverse depicts the "Primeira Missa" (First Mass) scene, illustrating Portuguese explorers and native Tupiniquim Indians during the first Christian mass in Brazil on 26 April 1500. This banknote was printed by the American Bank Note Company, New York, and measures 157 x 67 mm.
