About this banknote

The Banco Central do Brasil issued this 1 centavo banknote in 1967 as part of a provisional series during the transition to the Cruzeiro Novo currency. To facilitate the changeover, existing 10 cruzeiros notes were overprinted with a black circular stamp reading "BANCO CENTRAL" and "1 CENTAVO" within the circle.

The front of the note features a green design on a multicolor underprint, with a central portrait of former President Getúlio Dornelles Vargas, who served from 1930 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1954. The reverse displays an allegorical representation titled "Unidade Nacional," symbolizing national unity. This overprinted note measures 157 x 67 mm and was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited, London.
