The Banco de México issued the 5,000 pesos banknote on February 24, 1987. This note is part of a series produced between 1985 and 1989.
The front of the banknote features portraits of the "Niños Héroes"—Lieutenant Juan de la Barrera and cadets Vicente Suárez, Juan Escutia, Fernando Montes de Oca, Francisco Márquez, and Agustín Melgar—who perished defending Chapultepec Castle in 1847. The reverse depicts Chapultepec Castle. The note measures 154 x 66 mm and was printed by the Banco de México.
