The Banco de España issued the 500 pesetas banknote on August 15, 1928. This note was part of a series printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Engravers, New Malden, Surrey, England. The banknote was signed by Governor Carlos Vergara Cailleaux, Comptroller Adolfo Castaño Orejón, and Cashier Bonifacio Burgos Delgado.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros above the Cathedral of Toledo at the lower left. The reverse displays a depiction of "Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros freeing the captives of Oran," a painting by Francisco Jover y Casanova. The note measures 139 x 99 mm and has a watermark of a male portrait.
