About this banknote
The Ukrainian People's Republic issued the 500-hryven banknote in 1918, during its brief period of independence following World War I. To meet the urgent need for currency, the government contracted the Reichsdruckerei, the German state printing office, to produce these notes. The design was created by Heorhiy Narbut, a prominent Ukrainian graphic artist.
The obverse of the banknote features a woman's head adorned with a wreath at the upper center, symbolizing Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, with the national coat of arms, the trident (tryzub), positioned on both the left and right sides. The reverse displays a large trident at the center, accompanied by the denomination and state credit note notice. Measuring 185 x 120 mm, the note was printed on paper and predominantly colored in green and orange.
