About this banknote
The Central Bank of Brazil issued the 500 cruzeiros banknote (Pick 196a) between 1972 and 1974 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Brazil's independence in 1972. This commemorative series was part of the cruzeiro novo currency, which had been introduced in 1967 to replace the previous cruzeiro at a rate of 1 new cruzeiro for 1,000 old cruzeiros.
The obverse of the banknote features a sequence of stylized faces symbolizing the ethnic composition of the Brazilian people. The reverse displays five different maps of Brazil, each representing aspects such as integration, independence, colonization, trade, and discovery. The banknote measures 171 × 79 mm and was printed by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil. It was demonetized on February 27, 1986.
