About this banknote
The 500 cruzeiros banknote was issued by the Tesouro Nacional (National Treasury) of Brazil between 1961 and 1962. This series, printed by the American Bank Note Company, featured the inscription "Valor Legal" and was among the first to bear this designation.
The obverse displays a central portrait of Dom João VI, encased in an ornate frame, with the denomination numerals "500" on either side. The reverse features an allegorical representation of the "Abertura dos Portos" (Opening of the Ports), based on the artwork by Cadmo Fausto de Sousa. This banknote was demonetized on February 12, 1967.
