About this banknote
The Central Bank of Brazil issued the 500 cruzados novos banknote in 1990 as part of the Cruzado Novo series, which was introduced on January 15, 1989, replacing the previous cruzado currency at a rate of 1,000 cruzados to 1 cruzado novo. This series was short-lived, as the cruzado novo was replaced by the cruzeiro on March 15, 1990.
The obverse of the banknote features a portrait of scientist Augusto Ruschi (1915–1986) on the right, with orchids at the center. The reverse depicts Ruschi examining orchids, accompanied by a swallow-tailed hummingbird. The watermark is an effigy of the Republic. The note measures 140 x 65 mm and was printed by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil.
