About this banknote
The Banco Central de la República Argentina issued the 500 australes banknote between 1988 and 1990 as part of the "Austral" series introduced in 1985. This series was implemented under Finance Minister Juan Vital Sourrouille's Austral Plan, which aimed to stabilize the Argentine economy by replacing the previous peso argentino with the austral on June 15, 1985.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of Nicolás Avellaneda, Argentina's eighth president, with a latent image of "BCRA" incorporated into the design. The reverse depicts Liberty (Progreso) seated at the left center, holding a torch and shield. Printed by Casa de Moneda, the note measures 155 x 65 mm and lacks a security thread. It was demonetized on November 30, 1992.
