About this banknote
The Central Bank of Ceylon issued the 50 Rupees banknote (Pick 79Aa) on December 28, 1972, during the Republic period (1972–1978). This series was introduced following the adoption of the Republican Constitution on May 22, 1972, which led to the addition of "ශ්රී" (Sri) to the country's name in Sinhala on the banknotes.
The obverse features a portrait of Prime Minister Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike on the right. The reverse depicts a tea plantation scene, illustrating the significance of tea cultivation in Sri Lanka's economy. These banknotes were printed by Bradbury Wilkinson and Company, United Kingdom.
