About this banknote

The Central Bank of Turkey (Türkiye Cumhuriyet Merkez Bankası) issued the 50 New Turkish Lira banknote in 2005 as part of the Eighth Emission Group. This series was introduced on January 1, 2005, following the redenomination of the Turkish lira, which removed six zeros from the currency to combat hyperinflation. The new lira replaced the old lira at a rate of 1 new lira = 1,000,000 old lira.

The obverse of the banknote features a portrait of President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk at the center right. The reverse depicts the rock formations known as "fairy chimneys" in Cappadocia's Göreme National Park. The banknote measures 152 x 81 mm and includes a watermark of Atatürk. It was demonetized on December 31, 2019.
