The Central Bank of Venezuela (Banco Central de Venezuela) issued the 50 bolívares banknote on September 3, 2009. This release was part of the Bolívar Fuerte series, introduced in 2008 to replace the previous currency system.

The obverse features a portrait of Simón Rodríguez, a Venezuelan philosopher and educator, facing slightly to the right.
