About this banknote

The Banco de Portugal issued the 2,500 réis banknote on June 30, 1909. This note was part of a series introduced during the reign of King Manuel II, Portugal's last monarch, who ascended the throne in 1908. Following the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, existing banknotes were overprinted with "REPÚBLICA" to signify the change in government.

The front of the banknote features a portrait of Afonso de Albuquerque on the right side. The reverse displays an image of Mercury on the left and the crowned coat of arms at the center, with the "REPÚBLICA" overprint applied to the back.
