About this banknote
The Norges Bank issued the 200-krone banknote in 2002 as part of an upgrade to enhance security features. On 16 April 2002, the bank introduced this note with a wide holographic metallic strip to the right of the portrait, similar to the 500-krone and 1000-krone notes, to combat counterfeiting.
The front of the note features a portrait of scientist Kristian Birkeland, with the northern lights rising toward the North Star in the background. The reverse side displays a map of the North Polar region, illustrating Birkeland's theories on auroral currents. The note measures 144 x 70 mm and was printed by Norges Bank's Printing Works.
