About this banknote
The Tesouro Nacional (National Treasury) of Brazil issued the 20 cruzeiros banknote in 1943, following the currency reform that replaced the real with the cruzeiro at a rate of 1,000 réis to 1 cruzeiro on November 1, 1942. This series, printed by the American Bank Note Company in New York, featured handwritten signatures, a practice that continued until the early 1950s.
The obverse of the banknote displays a portrait of Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, Brazil's first president (1889–1891), centered within an ornate frame, with the denomination numerals "20" flanking the portrait. The reverse features an allegorical representation of the Proclamation of the Republic, based on a painting by Cadmo Fausto de Souza. This note was demonetized on February 12, 1967.
