About this banknote

The Bulgarian National Bank issued the 2 leva banknote (Pick 115a) on 5 July 1999, following the redenomination of the lev at a rate of 1,000 old leva to 1 new lev, aligning the new lev with the Deutsche Mark.

The obverse features a portrait of Paisius of Hilendar (1722–1773), with the Zografou Monastery on Mount Athos, the Monastery Seal, and the interior of Paisius' monastic cell in the background. The reverse displays a facsimile of the Zografou draft of the "Historiae Sclavo-Bulgaricus," along with images of Tsar Kaloyan’s Ring Seal and seals of Bulgarian Sovereigns Mihail Shishman, Svetoslav Terter, and Ivan Asen II. The banknote was demonetized on 31 December 2020.
