The Banco de España issued the 1000 pesetas banknote on October 21, 1940. This note was part of the second emission of 1940 and was printed by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre in Spain.
The front of the banknote features a helmeted bust of King Carlos I of Spain facing right within an oval medallion, accompanied by a fragment of the painting "The Emperor Charles V on Horseback in Mühlberg" from the Prado Museum in Madrid. The reverse displays the personal coat of arms of Carlos I. The note measures 156 x 103 mm and has a watermark depicting a female head.
